Chihuahuas - Photos - Description
Chihuahuas come in two varieties, short hair and long hair. They occur in fawn, blue, chestnut, and sand, and there is little limitation as to the color combination. They bear a distinctive 'saucy' facial expression and are very terrier-like in some traits of character, such as courage and behavior. They have a rather long life span, averaging 14-16 years, although some dogs reportedly reach 19-20 years of age.
Chihuahuas are small-6-9 inches in height and 2-6 pounds in weight. Any weight over 6 pounds is a disqualifying fault, and such dogs are never allowed to take part in shows. Head is apple-shaped and big in proportion to the body. Eyes are big, round, very dark, and set widely apart. Ears are big and always erect. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas appear strong and robust as because they have a deep chest and widely placed front paws. The Chihuahua tail curves over the back and is inclined to the side.
Puppies have a 'molera', an open section in the skull, which in some cases remains unclosed throughout the entire life. This is not a serious fault, although it makes dogs more vulnerable to injuries and traumas. The muzzle is pointed and not very long. Jaws either close in a scissors bite or are even. Chihuahuas with overshot and undershot jaws are penalized.
