This is a relatively healthy and long-lived breed, its life span averaging 15 years. These dogs are active and intelligent, and despite their small size, they enjoy regular exercise. They can do okay without a yard but should not be confined to small spaces either. They feature sturdy bodies with a well sprung ribcage, lean shoulders and straight limbs. The gait is smooth and firm, with a good reach in the front and a substantial drive in the rear. As speed increases, the front and the hind legs tend to converge toward the central line on gravity.

Dogs contained in rescue organizations are mostly adult and elderly, because people often get tired of their pets and abandon them. Often the rescue dogs have some health or behavior problems and require special attention and loving homes to live peacefully to the end of their lives. Prior to taking an abandoned dog home think carefully if you are prepared to own such a special animal. The dogs of this breed are usually low maintenance, but may require great vet expenses.
