Purebred dogs never weigh more than 6 pounds, and they measure 6-9 inches high at the shoulder. Some species can stand on all fours in the palm of one’s hand. Their portable size makes them excellent travel companions, and they can withstand and even enjoy long trips. They love company and should not be left alone for a long time. It takes some experience and patience to housetrain them, because they can be obstinate and wayward at times. Rough punishment is absolutely inadmissible, and these dogs only respond to positive reinforcement. They are usually distrustful toward strangers and other dogs.

Some breeders who are profit-oriented raise very small dogs of this breed and sell them at a high price. Such dogs are called teacup or pocket-size, but these terms are just a trick to attract prospective buyers who might purchase the dog on impulse. The fact is that very small dogs of this breed exist, but they are not a separate type. They can be either a freak of nature or they are prematurely born and are not fully developed and often have health problems. On rare occasions, this can be caused by a dwarf gene.
