History Of Chihuahua
The history of chihuahua origin states that this is the only dog originated from North America; it's not usually found in rescues.
Those ancient dogs were called Techichi and were very different from their modern descendants: they were larger in size and had long coats. Their skeletons have been found in ancient graves, and engravings with those dogs depicted on them have also been discovered. Most probably, modern dogs appeared after crossing the Techichi dog with some small breed brought into America by European or Asian immigrants. The breed as it is today became known in Europe in the end of the 19th century, and nowadays it is popular throughout the world.

The name of the breed shows that the ancestors of this dog came from the state in Mexico with the same name, but the true breed origin is unknown. Very small dogs were popular among the Aztecs and the Toltects. They were involved in the religious worship. Probably because these dogs had a molera (a soft spot on the head) they were presumed to have the power of leading the dead into the underworld and were sacrificed at the time of death of a human.
